Vilimale’ Hospital services have been temporarily relocated to the former Kudakudhinge Hiya (Children’s Shelter Home) building to make way for the construction of a new 112-bed hospital funded through Chinese assistance.

The existing hospital building will be demolished to allow construction of the new facility, which will be known as the Vilimale’-China Maldives Friendship Hospital. Until the new hospital is completed, services will be provided from the “Amaan Hiyaa” building in Vilimale’.

At a signing ceremony, State Minister for Health Ismail Adam and CEO of the Male' City Group of Hospitals Ibrahim Haleem formalized the agreement to operate the temporary facility.

Despite the presence of a hospital in Vilimale’, residents have long faced limited access to medical care.

The government has said the redevelopment forms part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare in preparation for population growth following the completion of the Thilamale' Bridge.

Minister of Construction Dr Abdulla Muththalib said the hospital project will proceed rapidly once design and contractor selection processes are finalized, with construction expected to begin early next year.

Chinese Ambassador to Maldives, Kong Xianhua, who signed the letter of exchange earlier this month, said that the planned facility will be the largest and most modern hospital in the country once completed.
