Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu has said that A-Level will be established as the school leaving qualification in Maldives by the end of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s five-year term.
Speaking at the High Achievers Awards ceremony held last night, the minister said the move aims to expand access to higher secondary education.
“There are still a large number of students who are deprived of A-Level education. We aim to eliminate this exclusion and make A-Level the standard school leaving qualification within these five years, paving the way for national progress,” the Minister said.
A pilot programme introduced last year in 23 government schools across the atolls has already led to a 38 perceent increase in A-Level enrolment. The initiative will be expanded this year to schools in Male' for students who have completed their O Level examinations.
The government is also offering A Level study opportunities to students who have passed only one or three O Level subjects, as part of efforts to increase participation.
According to Minister Shafeeu, 106 more students qualified for university admission through A Level results last year compared to the year before.
