Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen has announced plans to introduce a new insurance package to provide broader coverage for road vehicles.
Currently, third-party insurance is mandatory for all motor vehicles. However, this only covers damage caused to other vehicles and does not compensate for damage or theft of the insured vehicle itself which is a concern frequently raised by vehicle owners.
Speaking on the programme on State radio Dhivehiraajjeyge Adu, Minister Ameen said the government is working with insurance providers to offer a more comprehensive package that goes beyond third-party coverage.
“We are coordinating with companies to introduce a full insurance package, and we expect to roll it out within the next two months,” he said.
The minister also noted that the government is in the process of drafting amendments to existing laws to address persistent traffic issues in Male'.
