Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu said today that a SEN teachers training programme will be commenced within the year.

At the O'Level Top Ten ceremony, the Minister spoke about the challenges faced in hiring teachers. One of the areas where it is hardest to find qualified teachers is for Special Education Needs (SEN), he said.

"Even at present, we need about 600 SEN teachers. We need about 200 primary teachers as well. There is difficulty in finding Dhivehi and Islam teachers across many islands too," he said.

To address this issue, a SEN teacher training programme has now been planned, the Minister announced.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also announced last year that a programme under a brand new concept would be formed to train SEN teachers.

At the time, he said that this is a major priority for the government and added that risk allowance will be resumed for SEN teachers.
