Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel has concluded a visit to Istanbul, Turkiye, where he attended the 51st session of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Speaking at the session, held under the theme "OIC in a transforming world", Dr Khaleel highlighted the need to strengthen the effectiveness of the OIC and foster greater cooperation among member states.

He said this was crucial in addressing the challenges currently facing the Muslim world, and in upholding the values of peace and justice.

Addressing the worsening humanitarian situation in Palestine, Minister Khaleel expressed deep concern over the continued violence by Israel, which he said had caused immense destruction and suffering in Gaza. He reiterated the Maldives’ long-standing support for the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state, based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Minister Khaleel called on the international community and OIC member states to work towards formal recognition of Palestine, stating it was long overdue and essential to achieving lasting peace and justice in the region.

He also condemned ongoing Israeli attacks on Iran and criticised what he described as Israel’s disregard for international law and lack of accountability. The Maldivian delegation took part in a special session convened on the sidelines of the summit to discuss Israeli actions against Iran.

On the sidelines of the Council session, Dr Khaleel met with the Foreign Minister of Tajikistan. The two discussed strengthening bilateral ties and cooperation within the OIC framework.

The Council of Foreign Ministers is held annually and brings together foreign ministers from OIC member states to discuss pressing issues facing the Muslim Ummah and seek practical solutions.
