Minister announces major education sector reforms

Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced that 'revolutionary' changes will be brought to the education sector in aims to further streamline administration and improve results.

Minister of Education Dr Ismail Shafeeu has announced that 'revolutionary' changes will be brought to the education sector in aims to further streamline administration and improve results.

Speaking at the O'Level Top Ten ceremony, Shafeeu said that the highest priority will be given to improve administration and to modernize it.

He said that the biggest changes will be brought to the School Administration Section, with the superintendent's work to commence from today onwards under the new matrix formulated by the pay commission.

Changes to be brought this year include:

- Streamlining administration at the ministry

- Increase spending per child and offer better facilities

- Further training of teachers and improving their standards

- Improving administration of schools

- Establishing a positive environment for studying

- Evidence-based formulation of education policies

The minister said that students' results cannot be improved unless they are provided with better service, and stated that this year's budget includes MVR 300 million more than last year for education.
