Former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has welcomed the decision of former President and former Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed and The Democrats' decision to rejoin MDP.
Solih shared a post on X where he attached a clip from an interview with RaajjeTV last year. In the post, he welcomed The Democrats' decision and appealed for them to uphold Islamic values, democratic principles and prioritize public interest.
The Democrats, in an unofficial National Assembly meeting last Monday, passed a motion stating that it is imperative to have a strong opposition to ensure a win in the next local council election, hold the government accountable, and to re-establish public trust in a multi-party system.
Hence, Nasheed and many senior officials of The Democrats have decided to rejoin MDP.
However, Solih's post did not specifically mention Nasheed.
In the clip he attached with his post, he is seen stating that MDP is a party formed with unity, and there is the opportunity for anyone to join the party.
The Democrats was formed as a breakaway party from MDP on July 12, 2023 after Nasheed quit MDP following political differences between himself and other members of the party leadership, including Solih. Earlier this year, some of the leading figures of The Democrats moved back to MDP.
