Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)'s Parliamentary Group has said today that they will welcome anyone's membership, on condition that they do not pose harm to the party.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed, who split from MDP and formed breakaway party The Democrats, has decided to rejoin MDP. In an unofficial meeting held by The Democrat's National Assembly, some members of The Democrats, in addition to Nasheed, decided to work with MDP.

During Nasheed's split from MDP following differences of opinion between himself and then President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other MDP officials, Nasheed was serving as party president.

In a press conference held today, MDP's Parliamentary Group was asked if they would accept Nasheed and The Democrats' decision to rejoin MDP.

Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir said that every Maldivian citizen has the opportunity to join the party if they do not in any way act to harm the party.

Mauroof said that the parliamentary group has not yet officially discussed the matter, nor has an official decision been made yet on The Democrats joining MDP.

MDP has planned to hold an unofficial meeting of the party's National Council tonight to discuss the matter.
