A petition has been filed at the Employment Tribunal challenging the dismissal of Mariyam Zeeniya from her position as Secretary General of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

Zeeniya’s lawyer, Mohamed Faisal, confirmed that the tribunal accepted the case on 2 June and has since begun hearings. The case includes a request for an interim order to halt the appointment of a new Secretary General.

However, the tribunal declined to issue the interim order. Faisal said the decision would be appealed at High Court.

“Broadcom said that it would be very difficult to function without someone in the position of Secretary General. Therefore, the tribunal ruled that if the case is decided in Zeeniya’s favour, she would be eligible for compensation,” he said.

Zeeniya was dismissed from her role on 25 May following a three-day suspension. The commission cited obstruction of work and failure to cooperate in implementing decisions as grounds for termination.

Broadcom has since opened applications for the post, with nominations accepted until next Monday.
