Ministry of Social and Family Development has said today that seven percent of Maldives' population are persons with disabilities.

In the report shared on the 'Sarukaaru' website, the ministry said that persons with disabilities within the community need special protections and care.

Information shared with Mihaaru News by NSPA indicates that as of April, 14,188 persons are listed on the register of persons with disabilities.

The ministry raised concerns that there are some instances where persons with disabilities are excluded by society. This takes away from such persons being able to develop at the same level as others within communities and prevent them from meaningful community engagement.

The ministry urged to promote inclusion and to offer employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.

The ministry also advocated for holding more awareness programmes for the public in which challenges faced by persons with disabilities are shared, encouraging inclusion.
