Parliament has today approved the appointment of former journalist Zamath Ahmed Waheed to the Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom).

Broadcom member Aminath Ameena (Ana)'s term concludes today. Six persons applied when an announcement seeking members was made. Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions conducted interviews with all six applicants and graded them. Three of the applicants received over 75 percent. These are:

- Zamath Ahmed Waheed, former journalist at VNews - 89 percent

- Zeena Zahir, former Managing Director at PSM - 85 marks

- Shimla Ahmed, AO News founder - 77 percent

With these three names being forwarded to the parliament floor, a debate was held this morning. After the debate, voting was conducted in list order.

As such, Zamath's name was voted on first. 56 members voted in favour, with no votes against. As Zamath's name had so received approval, voting was not conducted on the remaining two names.

Parliament appointed another member to Broadcom last month as well. At the time, the highest marks had been received by Zeena. However, during the vote, parliament approved the fourth name on the list, TV presenter Moosa Rilwan, for the position. That time, Zamath received 77.5 percent.
