Housing Development Corporation (HDC) has begun issuing notices to residents in Hulhumale' who have failed to pay rent for their flats allocated under social housing schemes.
An HDC official told Mihaaru News that these notices are sent out every three months as a reminder to tenants to settle their dues.
The notices are payment advice letters, not eviction warnings, he said.
HDC stated that many residents have either not paid rent since moving into the flats or have made irregular payments. According to figures shared with the media outlet "Sun" last month under the Right to Information Act, unpaid rent from these housing units has reached over MVR 700 million.
Hulhumale' has a total of 8,511 housing units managed by HDC. Of these, only 3,219 units are paying rent consistently, while 5,099 units are in arrears.
As per the terms of the social housing agreements, HDC has the authority to repossess flats if tenants fail to pay rent. However, no flats have been confiscated for non-payment so far.
The government has recently reduced rents for various housing projects in Hulhumale', aiming to ease the financial burden on tenants.
