Maldivian flight to Kulhudhuffushi diverted back to Male' over strong winds

A Maldivian flight en route to Kulhudhuffushi from Velana International Airport diverted to Male' after failing to land due to strong winds.

Maldivian's flight Q2442 took off at 8:34 am and was expected to land at Kulhudhuffushi Airport by 9:20 am. However, due to bad weather conditions, the plane hovered in the air for nearly two hours before diverting back to Male’.

The ATR 72-600 aircraft finally landed in Male' around 11:00 am. Normally, the flight time between Male’ and Kulhudhuffushi is about 40 to 45 minutes.

Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) had issued a White Alert for regions including Kulhudhuffushi, wind winds ranging from 19 to 24 mph, and gusts expected to reach up to 40 mph.

The alert was issued for the area between Haa Alif to Lhaviyani atolls from 11:45 am to 4:00 pm today.

The strongest wind ever recorded in Maldives occurred on May 29, 1991, with gusts reaching 103.5 mph in Seenu atoll Gan.
