Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has opened nominations for a new public representative, as the term of current member Aminath Ummukulsoom is set to expire in August.

Applications are open until 12:00 noon on July 3, and must include relevant documentation such as criminal and debt record forms, academic qualifications, and certified copies of educational certificates.

Members of the JSC will serve a five-year term.

To be eligible, applicants must be Maldivian citizens over the age of 30, with no convictions for offences restricted by Islamic law or for crimes such as fraud or bribery. They must also not hold any elected or appointed political position, nor be a member or active participant in a political party.

The new member will be elected by a parliamentary vote.

JSC is responsible for the oversight and regulation of the judiciary. Its composition includes members appointed from the public, Supreme Court judge excluding the Chief Justice elected by the Supreme Court, a High Court judge, a judge elected by the lower courts, a member chosen from the parliament, the President of the Civil Service Commission, an appointee elected by the President and the Attorney General.
