Newly appointed Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen has pledged to uphold the rules of the Maldives Police Service and lead the institution with integrity.
Naveen, a veteran of the force with over three decades of service, was formally appointed yesterday following the resignation of former commissioner Ali Shujau on 26 April.
Speaking after his appointment, Naveen thanked President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for his support, saying the messages of encouragement had strengthened his resolve as he takes on the leadership of the force.
He is the second police commissioner appointed under the current administration.
“With integrity and a commitment to service, I will work to develop and strengthen the police institution,” Naveen said in a statement.
Naveen has 31 years of experience in police service. He has studied leadership, strategy, finance and international relations at the University of Southern Queensland, as well as criminal law in Malaysia and the UK.
He has also represented the Maldives at major international security forums, including the Interpol General Assembly and the Asia Counter Terrorism Forum.
Deadline for the post closed last Monday, with three candidates including Naveen, Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry and Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shameem filing their nominations.
Police Board evaluated all nominees and found them qualified. Naveen, who was acting commissioner at the time, was appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Home Minister, as required by law.
