Ismail Naveen has been appointed Commissioner of Police.

The appointment comes after the post became vacant on 26 April, when former Commissioner Ali Shujau stepped down. Under the Police Act, a new commissioner must be appointed within 45 days of a vacancy. The deadline expired today.

Naveen the current Acting Commissioner, along with Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikry and Assistant Commissioner Ahmed Shameem, had put forward nominations for the role.

All three were interviewed by the Police Board, which concluded they met the necessary criteria and submitted their names to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The President, on the advice of the Home Minister, chose Naveen for the role.

Naveen has served in the police force for several years and has undergone extensive high-level training. He received his letter of appointment earlier today.
