Prosecutor General's Office has pressed a charge against Raudh Ahmed Zilal regarding Hawwa Yumn Rasheed's fall from a building.
Raudh was arrested in relation to Yumn's fall from what Police have said is the 9th floor stairwell of H. Fentenoy onto the roof of an adjacent warehouse at H. Mitaaz on April 18.
PG sent the case to the Criminal Court on June 4.
According to the PG Office, Raudh is being charged with failure to provide assistance to a person in need without an acceptable reason. This charge carries a prison sentence of 1 month and 6 days.
PG Office said that this charge is being pressed against Raudh as he failed to help Yumn despite having known that she fell, and because he failed to alert any relevant authorities to the incident.
The PG Office went on to say that pressing criminal charges against a person does not equate guilt on their part. They said that the charges are being pressed as the office believes the evidence in hand is sufficient to prove guilt. In the instance that the court does not find them guilty, then they have the right to be considered innocent, the PG Office said.
Raudh was initially arrested six days after the incident. At the time, Police accused him of being involved in Yumnu's fall, being in a state of intoxication at the time of the incident, and sexual use.
After having his remand extended multiple times, Raudh was released on May 22. However, on the same day, he was rearrested under a new court order, and held in remand for a period of 5 days. At the end of this period, Raudh was released.
PG Office said that they had recommended Raudh's release as his time in detention may exceed any sentence that may be passed on him.
Raudh is the last person to have been seen with Yumn on the night of her fall. Before going to H. Fentenoy, the two went to H. Kashiveli, and prior to that spent time in Ma. Maandhooge Dhekunuge.
The other persons Police have said accompanied the two earlier on the night of the incident are Aishath Layaaly Iqbal, G. North Breeze, Izdhiyan Mohamed Maumoon, Ma. Maandhooge Dhekunuge, Yoosuf Ahmed Akram, Ma. Maandhooge Dhekunuge, Yoosuf Yassar Abdul Ghafoor, H. Meenaaz, Aminath Junaina Jamsheed, M. Thilafalhu, Hussain Hamees Ali, Ahi, N. Velidhoo and Ijaja Jaiz, April, Maathodaa, GDh. Faresmaathodaa.
However, Raudh alone was arrested in relation to the case. The remaining persons also refused to provide urine samples to Police for drug testing.
Police have not so far released any details regarding the investigation against these persons. However, their phones have been seized under a court order, and Police also said a travel ban had been placed against them.
