Maldives' welcomed this year's one millionth visitor today - an Indian tourist.

The one millionth visitor to Maldives this year is Kajol Singh from Patna, India. This is her first visit to the Maldives. Kajol arrived in Maldives on vacation with her husband on Indigo Airlines, with her stay booked at Bandos Island Resort.

Last year, Maldives' received the one millionth visitor on June 27. This year, the number has been reached two weeks early. Ministry of Tourism and Environment said that this is the first time in history that this number has been reached so early in the year.

India is the sixth most prominent source market for tourists arriving in Maldives. As of now, 56,000 Indian tourists have visited the Maldives this year. India was sixth on the list at the end of last year as well, although it was top of the list in 2023.

The numbers decreased following political disagreements between Maldives and India, but with relations now having improved, the number of visitors are also seeing a rise. MMPRC is also conducting special campaigns to promote Maldives as a tourist destination in India.

With one million tourists having arrived in Maldives as of now, this is a eight percent increase compared to last year. So far in June, 18 percent more tourists have arrived than last year. At present, the highest number of visitors are from China and Russia.

The government aims to reach 2.1 tourist arrivals before the end of the year.
