Maldives Broadcasting Commission (Broadcom) has opened nominations for the post of Secretary General (SG), following the dismissal of Mariyam Zeeniya on May 25.

Zeeniya had initially been suspended for three days on grounds of obstructing official work and failing to cooperate with the implementation of the Commission’s decisions. She was later removed from her post.

To be eligible for the position, applicants must either have a Level 9 qualification in a related field along with at least two years of management experience, or hold a Master’s degree with a minimum of three years of management experience.

In addition to academic and professional qualifications, candidates must demonstrate experience leading employees at senior management or executive levels.

Other requirements include the ability to work closely with professional, administrative, and technical staff, fluency in both Dhivehi and English, and the willingness to dedicate significant time to the responsibilities of the role. Candidates must not have any personal or financial interests in the broadcasting industry.

Familiarity with regulations related to government property, financial management, and employment law is also necessary.

The Secretary General will be appointed for a five-year term. The position offers a basic salary of MVR 20,500, an allowance of MVR 15,000, and a phone allowance of MVR 700. Additional allowances related to the duties of the post will also be provided.

The SG will be responsible for managing the Commission in accordance with the Constitution, relevant laws, the Commission Act, and internal regulations. Key responsibilities include planning staff development initiatives, protecting employee rights, resolving internal disputes, and ensuring administrative justice within the organization.

Application forms are available at Broadcom counters and on the Commission’s website. Interested candidates must submit their applications before June 23, 1:00 pm.

Zeeniya’s removal comes at a time of reported internal conflict within the Commission. Broadcom employees have submitted a petition to Parliament alleging that President of the Commission, Sofa Shafeeq, along with certain members, have been obstructing the Secretary General and Directors from carrying out their duties. The petition claims that the Commission’s leadership has disregarded established administrative processes and the structure necessary for effective management.
