President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reiterated that environmental protection is a national responsibility, integral to both the present and future prosperity and development of Maldives.

He made the remarks on X, in honor of World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5.

In his message, President Muizzu said Maldivian people’s deep respect for nature must be reflected in meaningful action, noting that the country’s natural environment is a key driver of foreign interest and investment.

He added that a significant portion of the Maldives’ revenue is directly dependent on the health of its seas and the pristine beauty of its islands.

This year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution,” underscores the urgent global need to combat plastic waste and its devastating impact on ecosystems, wildlife, and human health.

President Muizzu’s message echoed these concerns, highlighting the critical need for collective efforts to reduce plastic use and adopt sustainable alternatives.

Plastic pollution remains one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide. Each year, over 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced, and an estimated 19 to 23 million tonnes end up in the oceans and rivers, severely threatening marine life and contributing to widespread ecological damage.

President Muizzu’s called on all Maldivians to uphold environmental stewardship as a core national value, ensuring that the country's natural assets are protected not just for today's generation but for those yet to come.
