The government’s electric taxi line service is now scheduled to launch by the end of August, with dedicated parking land allocated in Hulhumale’ Phase Three for the new fleet of vehicles.
Although earlier announcements indicated a July start, a Transport Ministry official told Mihaaru News that the launch will take place in August as planned.
The service, which will be operated by MTCC, aims to modernize public transportation in Maldives by introducing electric vehicles (EVs) in a system modeled after international ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Grab.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen inspected the designated parking area in Hulhumale’ Phase Three.
MTCC, which already operates the bus service in Male’ region, has been awarded the contract to manage this new taxi initiative. According to Minister Ameen, MTCC has begun procuring vehicles suited for a 24-hour service, and preparations are underway for charging stations and vehicle maintenance facilities.
Initially, the launch was targeted for June or early July, but logistical preparations have pushed the rollout to August.
The government will begin the service with 100 electric taxis, addressing widespread complaints from the public about the lack of timely, reliable taxi availability despite over 1,500 vehicles registered under the existing e-taxi system.
While some existing taxi operators have raised concerns over government entry into the business, Transport Ministry insists the new service will complement existing options and improve standards. Current taxi drivers will also have the chance to participate in the new system.
The government plans to implement the taxi line in three phases.
- Phase One (2025): Launch in Male’, Hulhumale’, and Velana International Airport
- Phase Two (2026–2027): Expansion to Vilimale and Thilafushi
- Phase Three (2028–2029): Service to be extended to RasMale, Giraavaru Falhu, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, and Kulhudhuffushi City.
