Ministry of Environment has announced the commencement of teak tree distribution across Maldives, with the first shipment donated by the Sri Lankan government now delivered and ready for planting.

This effort is part of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s campaign to plant five million trees across the country.

The ministry stated that teak trees from the first shipment have been sent to airports and are being distributed to resorts that expressed interest. Each participating resort will receive two trees.

The next phase will see teak trees planted across all residential islands, where they will serve as natural landmarks.

"Teak will be planted as landmarks in all islands of Maldives," the ministry said in a statement.

Teak holds cultural and historical significance in Maldivian heritage, traditionally used in local craftsmanship due to its durable hardwood.

A national tree-planting event is scheduled to take place across the country on World Environment Day, this Thursday.
