President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the launch of the 'First Home' project, a nationwide housing initiative aimed at ensuring every Maldivian citizen aged 18 and above receives their first home; either a house or flat.
In an interview with PSM, President Muizzu highlighted housing as one of the country's most urgent challenges, especially in Male'.
He said that construction will begin this year in key areas like Giraavaru Falhu and Gulhifalhu, with 4,000 flats allocated for the Greater Male' Region alone.
Key features of the project include:
- All Maldivian citizens aged 18 and above are eligible
- Greater Male' Region and 57 other islands
- Written housing confirmations by end of 2025
- Funding through contractor financing or the state budget
- Priority given to individuals who lost homes in previous housing schemes, unless they’ve already received housing under another program
President Muizzu emphasized that this initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to solving the housing crisis, ensuring fairness, and improving quality of life across the country.
