Police have released the expatriate teacher accused of twisting and dislocating a student's finger in Th. Kan'doodhoo school.

The teacher, arrested last Tuesday, was released within 24 hours of arrest. Police said that the teacher had been released without extending remand after gathering necessary information for the investigation.

"As [the teacher] is cooperating with the investigation, they were released after necessary information for the investigation was taken," Police said.

Police earlier said that the 11 year old boy received treatment at the Veymandoo Hospital after his finger was twisted and dislocated. However, an official from the Education Ministry told Mihaare News that the incident occurred when the student hit the teacher on the back with a steel water bottle while he was delivering a lesson.

"When he was hit, he turned around and in reflex, happened to catch hold of the student's finger. That is what happened," the official said.

The official said that after the incident, the student's parents had entered school premises in the middle of lessons and had a verbal altercation using foul language. With this, the official said that the matter is being forwarded to Police.
