President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the start of a process aimed at easing indefinite pre-trial detention through the use of electronic monitoring and court-imposed conditions.
In a post on X , President Muizzu said the initiative was a joint effort by state agencies to address the issue of prolonged remand periods.
“The process of relaxing detention through an electronic monitoring system with court-imposed conditions has been launched today,” he wrote.
He said that it would provide solutions to this long-standing issue and relieve the remand of eligible persons.
However, further details about the framework or timeline for implementation were not disclosed.
Prosecutor General’s Office said that assessments will be made to determine the risk individuals pose to public safety before any decision is taken to release them under monitoring. Both police and corrections authorities will be involved in the risk evaluations.
The initiative follows President Muizzu’s pledges to reform the current system of indefinite pre-trial detention.
He has previously said that the most effective long-term solution is to accelerate investigations and judicial processes, and he has committed government support to facilitate that goal.
