Kaafu atoll Himmafushi Council has announced fully funded scholarships for students from degree level up to PhD, to boost higher education opportunities for local youth.
Council president Hassan Faiz told Mihaaru News that the initiative aims to motivate students in secondary education, improve academic outcomes, and invest in a generation of well-educated young people.
“A student who receives the scholarship can pursue any field, from a bachelor's degree to a PhD. If someone wants to study medicine, for example, the council will fund it to the highest level,” Faiz said.
Applications are open for 15 days from today. Eligible applicants must have completed Grade 10 between 2021 and 2024 at Himmafushi School.
From this year onwards, students named as the Best All-Rounder can apply for the scholarship within one month of receiving the award from the school.
Beginning this year, the council will automatically award scholarships to students who achieve a national top-10 ranking or are named as the school’s best all-rounder.
Details of the scholarship:
- Open to the top 10 students who completed Grade 10 between 2021 and 2024 at Himmafushi School
- Covers tuition, registration, administrative fees, and all other course-related costs
- MVR 2,500 monthly stipend for students studying in Maldives
- MVR 5,000 monthly stipend for students studying abroad
Students who drop out of their course are required to repay the council for all expenses. Recipients must also serve the island community upon completion of their studies:
- For courses between two and four years: five years of service on the island
- For courses longer than four years: seven years of service in a Himmafushi-based institution
Faiz said the programme is a long-term investment in the island’s future, aimed at developing professionals who will contribute back to their community.
