Former president Mohamed Nasheed has praised Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, stating there has never been any question over his integrity.
The remarks come amid reports alleging that Nasheed had spoken to the Chief Justice in relation to a case before the Supreme Court.
Nasheed dismissed the claims, stating that such talks are "lies from A to Z”.
“There is no doubt that he will carry out the responsibilities of his office with honesty and integrity,” Nasheed’s office said in a statement.
“It is for these very qualities that he was appointed Chief Justice.”
Chief Justice Muthasim has faced criticism for his silence following the suspension of three former Supreme Court judges; Husnu Suood, Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir. He has since submitted a petition for retirement to the Judicial Service Commission.
Muthasim was appointed Chief Justice in December 2019, and he previously served on the Supreme Court bench between 2010 and 2014.
He is currently the longest-serving Chief Justice under the Maldives’ 2008 constitution.
