Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sought the Prosecutor General’s Office to press charges against the former deputy principal of Laamu atoll Mundoo School, Adam Ali, over salary payments made in the name of an absent employee.
According to ACC, an employee who failed to report for work between July and November 2015 was neither dismissed nor removed from the payroll in line with Civil Service Regulations. Instead, the employee’s name remained on the salary sheet, which was approved and signed by Ali before being sent to the Ministry of Education.
It remains unclear whether the payments were collected by Ali or transferred to the absent employee, the commission said.
ACC alleges that Ali’s actions amount to misconduct under the Prevention and Prohibition of Corruption Act for failing to act in a manner that would have protected state interests.
The state incurred a loss of MVR 28,317.99 during the period. ACC has also instructed Mundhoo School to recover the funds.
