Former President Dr Mohamed Waheed has today been appointed as Special Envoy of the President.

The President's Office said that the position is not salaried.

Waheed, who earlier served as Vice President, member of the Special Majlis and senior roles at UNICEF, was appointed as Special Envoy in a ceremony held at the President's Office this morning.

Waheed extended thanks for the opportunity to serve the country, and assured he will fulfil his responsibilities to the fullest.

At the ceremony, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu emphasized that Waheed is a highly competent individual and appealed to him to work to strengthen Maldives' foreign relations. He further appealed to Waheed to work towards building relationships with international partners to facilitate economic development.

During the 2023 Presidential Elections, Waheed had left Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) due to differences in opinion regarding the presidential ticket. At the time, Waheed maintained that he hoped former President Abdulla Yameen would be granted the opportunity to run for President after he failed to secure the ticket due to a court ruling.
