Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) has advised all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours prior to departure, as the first group of Hajj pilgrims is scheduled to leave tomorrow, which will likely cause significant crowding in and around Velana International Airport.
In a post on X, MACL said that both the terminal and airport roads are expected to be congested over the coming days, and urged travelers to cooperate with airport staff and follow all instructions.
"Taxi centres and drivers are requested to cooperate to ensure smooth traffic flow during this busy period," MACL said.
The first group of 235 pilgrims will depart for Saudi Arabia on Monday. A second flight carrying 257 pilgrims is scheduled for Tuesday, followed by a third group of 250 pilgrims on Thursday. The final group of 250 is expected to depart on Friday.
According to the lunar calendar, this year’s Hajj pilgrimage falls on June 5.
Police have also issued an advisory urging pilgrims and the public to exercise caution, noting that traffic around the airport will be particularly heavy during departure days.
