Protecting wildlife key to preserving Maldives’ beauty: President Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that the Maldives’ natural beauty can only be preserved by protecting its rich biodiversity.

In a message shared to mark World Biodiversity Day, the President said the Maldives' greatest blessing lies in its natural beauty a gift that must be safeguarded through the conservation of its diverse species.

“This precious blessing can only be protected by protecting and maintaining the species,” Muizzu wrote.

World Biodiversity Day, observed annually on May 22, aims to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity in achieving sustainable development and fostering peaceful societies.

This year’s theme is “Be part of the Plan”, highlighting the link between the natural environment and sustainable development.

Situated in the heart of the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is especially renowned for its rich marine life. The country is home to three per cent of the world’s lagoons and hosts 250 species of coral and over 1,100 species of fish, including turtles, rays, and a variety of reef species.
