Maafannu Cemetery site in Male’ is being transformed into a multi-functional public space named "Maafannu Maizaan"

Male’ City Council has announced. The name was officially approved at a recent general meeting of the council.

As part of the development, a 3-on-3 basketball court will be constructed in the southwest corner of the existing parking zone. In addition to the court, the site will include a bus stop and parking space for 295 motorcycles, aimed at easing the congestion along Majeedhee Magu.

Maafannu Cemetery covers an area of 36,153 square feet.

The project includes a 496-square-foot exercise zone, as well as a designated green area for ceremonies and events. The council plans to enhance the location with landscaping, including the planting of large shady trees, flowering plants, garden trees, and fruit and vegetable trees, in a bid to create a greener, more community-friendly environment.

Construction work is scheduled to begin next week, Male' City Council stated.

"Mayor Adam Azim said that the Maafannu Maizaan project will significantly improve the quality of life for local residents. Residents of Maafannu will participate in the tree-planting efforts," the council said.

The area will be accessible 24 hours a day and a comprehensive water drainage system will also be established to manage flooding and water runoff, the council said.
