Maldives has signed an agreement with Cyprus to enhance the treatment and management of thalassemia in the country.

The agreement was signed by Maldives' Health Minister Abdulla Nazim and Cyprus’ Health Minister Michael Damianos during a ceremony held on the sidelines of the World Health Organization Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland.

According to the Ministry of Health, the agreement focuses on improving services for thalassemia patients in Maldives.

Key areas of collaboration include seeking the support of experienced medical professionals from Cyprus in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of thalassemia.

The partnership will also help strengthen the services provided by Maldivian Blood Services and facilitate the provision of specialist consultations through teleconferencing.

In addition, Cyprus will support the development of human resources in the Maldivian health sector, particularly in areas related to thalassemia care.

Minister Nazim emphasized that thalassemia is a major public health concern in the Maldives, with 18 percent of the population receiving treatment for the condition.

He said the collaboration with Cyprus, a country recognized for its expertise in thalassemia control, represents a significant step forward for the Maldivian health sector.

The agreement aims to boost cooperation in critical areas such as thalassemia prevention and management, blood transfusion services, and the exchange of clinical and technical expertise.
