An agreement has been signed with Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) to develop a nature park in two ecologically significant and protected islands; Haa Dhaalu atoll Keylakunu and Shaviyani atoll Farukolhu.

The agreement was signed by Environment Ministry State Minister Mohamed Faiz and MTDC Managing Director Ahmed Niyaz.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Faiz said the project aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge to establish at least one nature park in every atoll and promote tourism in the northern region. He assured that the development will preserve the protected status and ecological value of both islands.

“This is a project that will enhance tourism and economic growth while retaining the ecological integrity of the islands,” Faiz said.

MTDC’s MD Niyaz stated that the first step will be to design a concept for the eco-friendly park. He said that both islands will be developed in a way that maximizes environmental conservation while benefiting the local economy through ecotourism.

“Hopefully by next week we will begin work on the concept. After that, we will engage with government bodies and other stakeholders. God willing, we will launch the first phase of ecotourism development in both islands,” said Niyaz.

Farukolhu was declared a protected area in October 2018, recognized for its diverse ecosystem including seven types of mangroves, wetlands, and various endangered plant species like Rnadoo, Burevi, and Thakafathi.

It also serves as a key habitat for many bird species, making it a prime location for eco-based tourism and conservation education.
