Construction work on a causeway linking the islands of Muli and Naalaafushi in Meemu atoll officially began on Tuesday.
The project, awarded to Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) on 30 August 2023, involves the construction of a 565-metre causeway, including a 105-metre bridge built in three segments.
The scope of the work also includes paving the causeway, as well as building 112 metres of revetment and a 15-metre groyne.
The project has been awarded at a cost of MVR 125.5 million.
The launch of construction comes on the same day as the opening of the new domestic airport in Muli.
The government has stated that both infrastructure developments will strengthen economic activity and improve connectivity within the atoll.
The government also announced plans to reclaim two islands in the Muli lagoon to boost tourism in the region.
