It has been decided that children who complete memorization of the Quran in Alifu Alifu atoll Mathiveri will receive MVR 50,000.
Announcing the initiative, Mathiveri Council President Ahmed Aslam said the decision is part of a broader development plan aimed at nurturing religious scholarship and encouraging Quranic education on the island.
“We hope this programme will promote Quranic knowledge and inspire more children to undertake memorization,” Aslam said.
While Mathiveri currently has no certified Hafiz; a person who has memorised the Qur’an in its entirety, two children are expected to complete their certification this year, becoming the island’s first.
Similar initiatives have been adopted elsewhere. Kaafu atoll Huraa Council recently approved MVR 150,000 for each child who becomes a Hafiz.
The government is also investing in Qur’an education, with a five-year goal to increase the number of certified Hafiz to 1,000. So far, 250 children have received certification through state-supported programmes.
According to the most recent figures from the Quran Centre, Maldives currently has 266 certified Hafiz, including 126 women and 140 men.
