Registration of land plots allocated under the previous government’s Binveriyaa housing scheme will begin this month, said Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib.
The announcement follows the release of a revised land use plan for Gulhifalhu on yesterday.
In a post on X, Minister Muththalib said the original allocation of plots from both reclaimed and unreclaimed areas had complicated the registration process. The revised plan allocates all residential plots exclusively from the reclaimed area.
He said the changes had affected land previously designated for commercial, institutional and other purposes, but the adjustments were necessary to fast-track the registration process in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s policy to expedite land handovers.
“This change has been discussed with the association representing landowners, and consensus has been reached on how the allocation will proceed,” he said. “God willing, the lottery draw will be held this month and land registration will commence.”
He added that the land will be handed over once the survey is completed, Minister Muththalib said.
Under the previous administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, land was allocated to people of Malé from both the reclaimed and un-reclaimed parts of the island. Since then, there have been several issues with reclaiming the deeper part of the island's lagoon.
After that, the current administration decided to reclaim an additional 85 hectares from Gulhifalhu and revised the land use plan. This included issuing 3,520 new plots.
The second amendment to the plan was published on Saturday, which marked the area from which the plots would be issued. However it did not identify from which part the plots would be allocated.
The plots also include housing and residential plots, along with zones dedicated for government offices, various other purposes and one for commercial activities.
However, the plan also designates areas for tourism, schools and mosques.
