The Tesla car awarded in last year’s Dhiraagu "Win a Tesla" promotion has become Maldives’ first Tesla providing taxi service.
Musthafa Mohamed from Kaafu atoll Thulusdhoo was the winner of the Tesla car. He later sold the vehicle to Ali Zameer Adam, a Avas Ride taxi driver.
While the sale price was not disclosed, Ali said he received the car a week ago and has since registered it as a taxi.
Speaking to Mihaaru News, Ali said he took his first ride today using the Tesla, aiming to explore whether operating a modern, high-end vehicle could lead to better income.
Despite the Tesla’s premium features, passengers will be charged government-fixed taxi fares, just like with any regular taxi, he said.
“Even if the car is hailed from the road, a ride will be provided,” said Ali, who has been in the taxi business since the early 2000s.
In addition to regular trips, Ali plans to offer the Tesla for private rentals at negotiated rates.
Living in Hulhumale' with his three children, Ali said that his income from taxi services has declined in recent years. With this new Tesla taxi, he hopes to see a positive shift in earnings.
