Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohamed Riyaz has been transferred to the National Drug Agency (NDA) for a two-year term, under secondment policy.
He will however be retaining his current salary and allowances during the term.
The transfer was made under the police secondment policy, as outlined in Article 31 of the Police Service Act, which authorizes the Commissioner of Police to assign officers to other agencies for a specified period.
The provision also allows for personnel from outside to be assigned to the police service under regulations defined by the Act. Additionally, the Act allows for secondments to foreign law enforcement agencies, diplomatic missions, or regional and international organizations.
Riyaz previously headed the Crime Investigation Department but was relieved of that role in November 2023, shortly after the current administration took office.
During his tenure as head of investigations, Riyaz led several high-profile probes, including cases involving former President Abdulla Yameen. These investigations drew criticism from officials in the current administration while they were in opposition.
