Maldives Health Professionals Union (MHPU) has condemned the bullying of a male nurse who was insulted on social media after giving an interview to a TV channel on Nurses Day yesterday.

In a statement, the union said it was “unacceptable” that the nurse was targeted with derogatory remarks based on his appearance across various platforms.

“The union believes that insulting a person on the basis of their appearance is a very degrading act that should not be seen in a civilized society,” the statement read.

MHPU said that nursing is not a gender-specific profession and highlighted the importance of participation from all members of society in the healthcare sector.

The union also noted that bullying, intimidation, and verbal abuse have become routine challenges faced by healthcare workers in Maldives. It called for greater support and care to help health professionals overcome such mistreatment.

Women still make up 90 percent of the nursing workforce in the country.
