Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has submitted a proposal to the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to retire from his position.
While the proposal has been submitted, his retirement will only take effect following a decision from the JSC.
Chief Justice Muthasim has requested to retire with honours and has recently hinted at his intention to step down, stating at a Bar Council ceremony that he may no longer appear in his current capacity.
Appointed as Chief Justice in December 2019, Muthasim is the longest-serving Chief Justice under the current Maldivian Constitution.
He previously served as a Supreme Court judge from 2010 to 2014.
JSC has recently forwarded to Parliament seeking the dismissal of judges Dr Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir. The two judges, including former judge Husnu Suood, who resigned last month were suspended back in February. Judge Hussain Shaheed has since been appointed to the Supreme Court bench following Suood's resignation.
Their suspension coincided with the Court's deliberation on a constitutional amendment that would strip MPs of their seats if they switch political parties.
