President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has pledged that his administration will prioritise the needs of thalassaemia patients, reaffirming a patient-centred approach.
He made this remark during a meeting held this morning at the President's Office with representatives of the thalassemia community.
The forum served as a platform for the Thalassemia community to express their concerns and propose solutions directly to the President.
Representatives acknowledged the government’s responsiveness and the effort it has made to engage with their needs.
A key proposal put forth was for the development of the upcoming Thalassemia Hospital to be shaped through the active involvement of the community
Highlighting the importance of inclusive decision-making, they called for policies related to thalassemia to reflect the lived experiences and insights of patients and families.
Another major focus was the enhancement of the Maldives Blood Service (MBS). Community members advocated for transforming MBS into a nationwide, comprehensive, and coordinated system that works in closer collaboration with patients.
President Muizzu responded by assuring the community that their concerns would be thoroughly reviewed and addressed. He recognized the importance of participatory policy-making and pledged to open avenues for sustained dialogue. He also committed to facilitating access to full treatment for thalassemia patients within Maldives, eliminating the need for treatment abroad.
President Muizzu affirmed the legitimacy of the issues raised and committed to taking tangible, lasting action to resolve them.
