Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed, who sustained critical injuries after falling onto the roof of a warehouse in Male', is slowly recovering, according to her family.
Yumnu has been receiving treatment in Malaysia since last Saturday. Her family reports that she is now conscious and in a stable condition, although still in ICU. A feeding tube previously connected to her has been removed.
She is scheduled to undergo surgery on her knee next Thursday, the family said.
While her overall condition is gradually improving, Yumnu has been battling a lung infection for the past two days.
Her most critical surgery was performed on the fourth day of her treatment in Malaysia. The five-hour operation was necessary to treat a fragmented spinal fracture near her lower neck and was completed successfully, her family said.
Yumnu was found seriously injured on 18 April after falling onto the roof of a warehouse at H. Mitaaz. Police have said she fell from a fanlight in the ninth-floor stairwell of the adjacent building, H. Fentenoy. She was initially treated in the ICU at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) before being transferred abroad.
With approval to travel, her family flew her to Malaysia, where several of her relatives also reside. The government decided to cover her treatment costs and provided USD 25,000 (MVR 385,500) through the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA), which included the expense of booking 12 airline seats for her travel.
In addition, more than MVR 700,000 was raised through TikTok for her treatment.
Raudh Ahmed Zilal, who was the last person seen with Yumnu before the incident, has been arrested and remanded in custody for 10 days. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has since appointed a Presidential Commission to investigate the incident.
