President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the government has decided to achieve 100 percent renewable energy in Raa atoll Vaadhoo by the end of this year.
In yesterday's 14 hour press conference, President Muizzu stated that this administration places high precedence on providing opportunities for investment in renewable energy. He stated that many projects have been commenced in this area even as of now.
One such project is making the island of Vaadhoo powered entirely by renewable energy. The project was first announced on the President's visit to Vaadhoo in January.
"We have decided to make Raa atoll Vaadhoo an island 100 percent powered through solar. It is something residents of Vaadhoo have also begun now very innovatively. The island's residents are very innovative at things like this," the President said.
"Hence, we decided to designate this island as a model island, and to ensure the island is fully powered through solar energy by the end of the year."
The President said that the project is now ready to be awarded to a party.
"It is something we eagerly look forward to to consider this as a model, a pilot project, and transfer other islands, too, to solar power completely."
It is a presidential pledge to generate 33 percent of energy through renewable sources by the end of 2028, to decrease Maldives' dependence on oil.
To achieve this, the government also has plans to implement a major renewable energy project in the Greater Male' Area as well. The 'Floating Solar' project, planned for a lagoon in Male' atoll, is expected to generate 100 to 150 mW of solar energy. The government announced seeking contractors for this project in March.
