Kaafu atoll Huraa Island Council has decided to grant MVR 150,000 to each Hafiz on the island.

Council member Hassan Firaash said that the council has decided to lead a program to train young huffaz on the island. He said that the decision was made as there are currently no huffaz on the island.

"There is no Hafiz to serve as Imam and lead prayers at the mosque. The council is now working on bringing in a Quran teacher. To conduct Quran classes for school students, and Hifz classes. No fee will be taken, the classes will be conducted free of charge. The council will bear the expenses," he said.

He said that necessary permits have now been obtained to conduct these Quran classes, with efforts now on seeking a teacher.

Every person who completes Hifz and certifies as a Hafiz, either through the class or independently, will be given MVR 150,000 by the council, Firash said.

'Our aim is to create a high number of Huffaz in the island. Even if its three children a year, our target is to train Huffaz," he said.

Statistics shared by the National Centre for Holy Quran show that there are currently 266 Huffaz in the Maldives. 126 of these are females, and 140, male.
