Ministry of Islamic Affairs has announced today that there will be a delay in depositing salaries of Imams across the atolls due to issues faced in the salary system. They said that they are currently unable to say when the issue will be resolved, and salaries deposited.
The ministry said that salaries of Imams in islands are entered into an online system by the Island Councils, and this system is currently facing technical issues.
A ministry official said that they are working on resolving the issue at the earliest.
"As it is an internal issue, we are unable to say exactly when the salaries can be paid. This doesn't usually happen, it just happened this time all of a sudden," they said.
There are some Imams who get an allowance, and some who get salaries. Salaries are paid to Imams in permanent positions. Ministry did not disclose how many Imams will be affected by the salary delays.
