President of the Presidential Commission investigating Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed's fall from a building, Dr Mohamed Munavvar, has stated today that he does not expect the commission's work will take a long period of time, expressing hope that it can be concluded 'very swiftly'.
In the ongoing press conference held to announce commencement of the commission's work, Munavvar assured that the commission will work freely and fairly, while keeping in consideration public sentiments.
Meanwhile, Yumnu's family has voiced that they do not have confidence in the commission.
Responding to this, Munavvar said that he is not surprised about the comments on trust in this commission, as the public has had mixed responses to similar commissions formed in the past as well.
Munavvar said that it would be no easy task to attempt to exert influence over him, asserting that he would not remain in the commission unless he is allowed to work independently and free of influence.
Regarding the commission's manner of work, Munavvar said that they would assist the Police in completing their investigation. He said that it is the commission's purpose to ensure justice is served in this case.
Although the President's resolution granted the commission investigative powers, Munavvar said that it is the government who will decide if Police will cease the investigation, allowing the commission to conduct the investigation, or if the Police investigation will proceed as well. However, the Commission will look into the current progress of the Police investigation, and how it was conducted, he added.
A reporter then asked if there is a budget allocated for the commission's work and how much the salaries of commission members are.
Responding to this, Munavvar said that he is so far not aware whether or not there is a budget allocation, adding that this has not yet been discussed. He also said that he has no knowledge of whether members will be granted a salary.
