National Centre for the Holy Quran has stated that the highest number of Huffaz (Hafiz - a person who has memorized the Quran) are in Addu City.

Information shared by the centre in response to a Right To Information request submitted by Mihaaru News reveals that there are currently 266 trained Huffaz in Maldives. This includes 126 females, an 140 males.

The centre said that in terms of population, the highest number of Huffaz are from Addu City. These are 65 Huffaz, with the average age being 53 years.

The second highest number of Huffaz are in Fuvahmulah, with the number at 61. The average age of Huffaz in Fuvahmulah is 48 years.

Third on the list is Lh. Naifaru, with 10 Huffaz. Most of these are school students.

There are 47 Huffaz on Male' City's permanent registry.

The centre also revealed that the youngest Hafiz in Maldives currently is Aman Ahmed Athif, Daisymaage, B. Hithaadhoo, who is only ten years of age.

The oldest Hafiz is Mohamed Naeem, 91, of Ice-ge, S. Feydhoo.
