Nasheed commends Shujau for resignation

Former President Mohamed Nasheed has commended former Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau following his resignation last night.

Shujau's resignation comes in the wake of nights of protest by youth and public criticism aimed at Police's handling of the investigation into Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed's fall from a building.

In a post on X, Nasheed stated that resigning in order to accept responsibility or to prevent further escalation of an incident is the best democratic policy.

He stated that it is the benefit of the people that must always be at the forefront of any decision, welcoming Shujau's decision to resign.

Shujau was appointed Commissioner of Police on December 25, 2023.

Following Shujau's resignation, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has been appointed Acting Commissioner.
