Prosecutor General Abbas Shareef has called for an investigation into whether Police acted against the Police Act in their investigation into the case of Hawwa Yumnu Rasheed.

Yumnu was found fallen onto the roof of an adjacent warehouse from what is believed to be the 9th floor of H. Fentoniya on April 18.

While there is rising criticism of Police in response to their investigation of the case, Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has resigned yesterday.

In a statement issued last night, the Prosecutor General has instructed to investigate if any Police Officers involved in the investigation had acted against laws or procedures, and action to be taken if there is any incident of Police negligence.

The statement also said that Police had been instructed not to disclose any information that may infringe upon the rights and reputation of the victim. It said that Police have also been instructed to ensure rights of any individuals are not infringed upon when they release details of the investigation, and that it does not pose obstructions to the investigation in hand.

The statement also confirmed that the PG Office is looking into complaints submitted by the public in relation to the case.

Initially in the investigation, Police claimed that Yumnu had fallen from the building on her own, with no involvement of any other persons. At the time, Police decided not to make any arrests in relation to the case.

However, with public outrage rising, Police later arrested Raudh Ahmed Zilal, who was accompanying Yumnu in the final hours before the incident. Police have also now seized the phones of all individuals who had been with Yumnu earlier on the night, and placed travel bans against them.
